Selina, the “Digital Nomad Hotel of the Future” announced the launch of Luna Nueva, their new loyalty program. The program’s name follows in line with the brand’s overall ode to the Greeks’ fascination with the gods and moon.

Luna Nueva, Selina’s Loyalty Program

In our past reviews of Selina properties, it was noted that there was no frequent traveler/loyalty program. Billed as the first phase of a new initiative, Luna Nueva shows Selina customers appreciation for being the “best community on the planet”.

The program is accessible via the Selina app. Guests who book direct their rooms through the app will earn 10 “tokens” per $1 USD spent. It appears that these tokens will only be able to be used on accommodations.

Loyalty Programs Are Only Worth The Benefits They Offer

When I first saw this news, I got SUPER excited! Because well, I’m pretty obsessed with using points and miles to cowork and travel the world for (almost) free. However, once I did some digging around I realized that they are quite light on details. Loyalty programs, after all are worth their weight in benefits. Not just how you can earn and burn those points.

The program is in beta, and they acknowledge that there will be additional benefits “coming soon”. Tokens can only be earned or burned on accommodations, even though you can book tours, activities and even coworking spaces through the app. Basically each token earned is worth .10 towards your room cost. You must have a minimum of 2000 tokens to redeem ($200 USD).

This program differs from other hotel programs such as Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. While opting not to have category tiers for award bookings, at the very least I’m happy to find a reason why to book direct. Up until recently the best way to earn points on a Selina booking would have been via Booking.com, earning miles through the AAdvantage eShopping Portal.

Define “Additional” Benefits

I’m a little unsure as to how “additional” their additional benefits are. There’s a “members’ happy hour” invitation at the start of each new stay, but as part of their brand, they’ve always offered a free welcome drink.

Library books? Each property has a library that’s up until now been available to all guests. I’ve always loved their concept to have a curated blend of books based on genre and language of the country, as well as Spanish and English.

“Free activities” is quite vague. I know that depending on existing packages offered, perks like a weekly free yoga class are available to coliving or coworking guests. What I’d like to know more about are the discounts available for tours, coworking or maybe even food and beverage?

The Final Take

Having a loyalty program is a step in the right direction. It’s better than not having one. That said, I’d like to see some clarification on what the member benefits include. Especially if they are alluding to free or exclusive events, etc. Lastly, it would also be nice if you were able to earn on all revenue spent, rather than just the room. Until then, we’ll just wait and see.
