United Offers 5x Award Miles Bonus on Flights to Mexico City

United Airlines announces bonus award miles equal to 5x the fare on qualifying flights between New York from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Mexico City.

Competition is Heating Up

The most popular route flying from the United States to Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) is New York City. It’s no surprise that Delta and Aeromexico are the top two airlines who fly that route. Number three? Well, that would be EL AL. (Thanks in part to their partnership with Aeromexico, one of only two airlines they offer reciprocal benefits.) So with that info and this list:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • jetBlue
  • Southwest Airlines

of all the US based airlines who service MEX, it’s no wonder United Airlines is getting competitive.

With RT fares coming in as low as $240.00, how low can you go when trying to compete? Looks like rather than slashing fares even further, United is getting creative with this new promotion, luring passengers with bonus award miles. From now through May 31, 2019 any MileagePlus members who register on the promotional site will be eligible to earn on any qualified flights.

For credit to be earned, the flight must take place within the promotional period and is limited to a maximum of 100,000 bonus award miles. No different than any other fare, no bonus miles are eligible for Basic Economy fares. Connections to/from EWR and MEX do qualify for bonus miles, but is not applicable for any upper cabin fare multipliers.

So Is It Worth the Miles?

From doing just a bit of research, we say YES. After searching for 5 day RT pricing throughout the promotional period, there’s plenty of United Economy fares as low as $289. The most expensive fares peak between now and the 2nd week of January as high as $900. That’s to be expected as it’s the holidays and all.

The median price we’ve found was $382 ($235 Fare and $147 Taxes and Fees). So that means you’re looking at total award mile earnings of:

General Member: 2,350 miles vs. 1,175 miles

Premier Silver: 2,820 miles vs. 1,645 miles

Premier Gold: 3,055 miles vs. 1,880 miles

Premier Platinum: 3,290 miles vs. 2,115 miles

Premier 1k: 3,760 miles vs. 2,585 miles
